Step 1

Add the oil and the sugar to a 12-ounce, microwave-safe mug, and combine with a fork.

Step 2

Add the egg yolk and vanilla, and mix again.

Step 3

Add the buttermilk and mix again.

Step 4

Add the flour, baking powder, salt and cocoa powder to the mug and using your fork, mix to combine. Add the chocolate chips and mix a final time.

Step 5

Place your mug in the microwave (on high) for 1 1/2 to 2 minutes. The cake is done when the top is still slightly sticky but not wet. Be very careful when removing the mug from the microwave as it will be quite hot! Serve warm with ice cream or topped with whipped cream.
